Use Claude Desktop with an API key

Claude Desktop can use an inference service you choose instead of your claude.ai sign-in. Set it up once and the conversations in Claude Desktop go through that address.

Set it up

  1. In Claude Desktop, open Help → Troubleshooting → Enable Developer Mode, and restart when asked.
  2. Open Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference.
  3. Choose gateway as the provider. Enter https://relay.roamai.cloud:18443 as the Base URL and your key as the API key.
  4. Save, then quit and reopen Claude Desktop.

Choosing a model

The model picker lists the models your key can use. If an admin limited the key to certain models, only those are listed.

What is different once connected

  • It keeps a separate set of conversations. Chats from your claude.ai sign-in do not show up.
  • SSH sessions, cloud environments and Remote Control are not available.

If commands keep getting refused

If, in auto mode, commands that need a judgment call (downloading something from the internet, for example) keep being refused and the model says the action is unavailable, switch the permission mode to asking each time and approve them yourself.

Turn off telemetry

Claude Desktop and Claude Code send usage analytics and crash reports to Anthropic by default. How to turn them off.

One key per person for Claude Code

RoamAI is a Claude API for teams: issue a key in the console and put it into Claude Code, Claude Desktop or an SDK. No monthly fee; usage is charged per token.
